#Rookie Corner Season Review: From a broken leg to the World Rookie Tour finals

2013-04-25 14:44 by Santa Cruz Snowboards

The winter season 2012/13 was very special for one our youngest team riders: Our Austrian rookie Moritz Amsüss. After a glorious season kick-off during fall with many great sessions, his season took an early twist when a stupid mistake turned into a painful surgery and a 3 months break. However due to his incredible willpower and physical strength he returned to the snow stronger than ever and even competed in the finals of the World Rookie Tour earlier this spring. Here is the story of Moritz’ rollercoaster season.

December 1st, 2012 – 2:30pm – Stubaier Glacier / Austria. It was nice day shredding with my mates in the park on the glacier. Winter was slowly approaching my beloved Alps and I was full of energy for a great season. I was already practicing a lot during the fall months on the glaciers, had some great sessions and first contests – happy to be finally back on board. So that December 1st, I actually didn’t want to push it too hard and to that day I don’t know what exactly went wrong. All I do exactly remember was that horrible pain in my right foot. Somehow I screwed the landing and felt like I twisted my ankle. I didn’t think of broken bones yet, however as the pain didn’t get any better in the evening, we decided to go to the hospital in Starnberg/Germany. The doctors found out that there was an actual fracture on the bone. They gave me a cast and after two days I was released again.

However I had this bad feeling, that it’s still not over and that there was something more wrong in my leg. So we went to see a specialist in Garmisch, the team doc of the German Snowboard Association. He took a closer look on me and we found out that besides a broken shin and calf bone, I had also shifted my growth plate. That was a huge shock for me. I heard of such fractions before and that it could lead to a stop in the bone growth. For me that meant immediate surgery, what happened on December 6th. From there onwards I had new body parts: 2 metal plates and 9 screws held my leg together.

After one week I was already walking around on crutches with a splint on my leg. And finally after two more weeks I could put some weight on my leg.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/Moritz 3 Wochen nach OP.jpg

The worst part of this time besides the pain was of course the huge boredom. I could see on Facebook how all my mates were having great time on the mountains and I was bound to my bed like a prisoner. Not to get too mental though I tried to keep my mind away from the snow with physiotherapy to get back the feeling and balance, as well as some training for my brain while playing Scrabble or Rummikub or editing movies on my notebook.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/Moritz 2 Tage nach OP.jpg

On February 21st the plates and screws were taken out and only 5 days later I was already on my way to Ufa / Russia. I was elected to take part in the World Children’s Games already before my accident. I know a participation was more or less not realistic but still I wanted to go there and at least cheer for my team and so I was really happy just to be part of that epic trip.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/götschen 1.jpg

After 3 months of not having touched a snowboard, I gave it a try again in Russia on February 27th. Of course I felt a bit shaky in the beginning but it didn’t took too long until I got the feeling back. So I asked if I could still compete in the slopestyle competition and since I got the go from the doctors, that was alright. After a solid run in the qualifications and no pain I went for the finals on March 1st and it ranked 4th in the end! I was superstoked. Not so much on the ranking (which was also great of course), but more about the performance itself, that after such a long break I was still able to pull of a great run. That made me more than happy and finally all the confidence and motivation that I had in the beginning of the season was back, running through my veins.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/götschen 2.jpg

After the great time in Russia, the season went on with the training at the German Snowboard Association. Later in March I was then competing at the Flying Potatoes Contest in Götschen and made the second place! Now I finally knew that the season was far but not over and I started to focus on something again that was out of sight for a long time: The finals of the legendary World Rookie Tour. But as I was injured for such a long time, it was hard to get in.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/götschen3.jpg

I tried to distract myself and just enjoy my full health again so I went for a little skate trip to Barcelona.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/05_Moritz_Comeback/Moritz Skatetraining Barcelona.jpg

In the meantime my friends from the Austrian and German Snowboard Association tried their best to get me in to the WRT finals, which take place in early April in Ischgl / Austria. I couldn’t believe my eyes, when I first heard that I actually some got a wildcard for the finals! What a huge chance! I put all my focus together for this special event – one last time this crazy season. The slopestyle course was perfectly set and the weather couldn’t have been any better. I threw down two solid runs and in the end finished on the 11th place. I was really proud of myself, as I was second best German and Austrian grom rookie in the category slopestyle. What a way to end this rollercoaster season!

Now I changed the snowboard for my skateboard again and try to enjoy a relaxed summer, before getting back on snow in early fall again. And even if the old season just ended, I’m already psyched on getting back on snow.

Enjoy your summer – see you next season!

#Rookie Corner: It's a disaster! The snowboard season 12/13 has come to an end!

Enjoying the perfect weather, I took part in the last two Audi Snowseries contests on the Glacier 3000 in Les Diablerets. With the 10th place in the Elite Men Slopestyle contest on Saturday and the 9th place on Sunday I'm very happy to have successfully finished the season.

We were lucky to still be able to carry out this competition because most of the resorts here in Switzerland are already closed down (what a shame - I don't want to stop!)

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/04_Robin_End_of_Season/Me & my team.JPG

I know this sounds stupid for most, but I am actually already looking forward to September, when I can get back on snow again and shred with my team. But in the meanwhile I will simply try to stay in shape and work out with my skateboard ;)

Wishing you all a lovely and enjoyable summer - You will be hearing from me, whatever I do ...

Regards, Robin.

Hôgmoa Huckfest with the Nasty Dudes

Same as in the previous years, the end of March always marks the date for a special event in the heart of the Austrian Alps: The Hôgmoa Huckfest. This special shred event stands for various competitions within one crazy festival day. There is a shred jam session, a beer session and the speciality of the day: an indian leg wrestling session.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/02_Hoagma_Nasty_Dudes/953.jpg

The jamsession in the snowpark was quite relaxed - just having a good time with your mates. Once the actual competition was over, our dudes Daniel and Roman just kept on shredding until the landing was left in a lake of spring slush.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/02_Hoagma_Nasty_Dudes/1264.jpg

Next up was leg wrestling. Well it seems our dudes Daniel and Matthias spent most of the energy already in the park and got beaten already in the first round. However Roman was doing really well and even beat the winner of lasty year's comp! But also our female shreadhead Katrin was wrestling like a pro in the girls competition!

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/02_Hoagma_Nasty_Dudes/1286.jpg

After all this exhaustion, the only thing left to do was killing some cold ones and enjoying the evening sun around that lovely campfire. What a great way to end such a spectacular day ..

Results of the overall competition:

1. Daniel Naschberger

2. Simon Fliri

3. Matthias Haas

#Rookie Corner: Robin's Easter holidays

Now that the season is coming to an end, I took the opportunity to go to Saas Fee for a few training session, as I am still taking part in the very last Audi Slope Style contest here in Switzerland (13. - 14.04.2013).

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/01_Robin_Easter_Shred/_DSC3411.JPG

Saas Fee is a beautiful place in the Swiss Alps and the funpark with kickers, boxes, rails and one of the few pipes in the country, lies at 2600 metres above sea level. It has a glacier, which is open practically all year round and gives us and other international teams the possibility to start practicing from mid August onwards. The weather and snow conditions were fantastic and hardly any people on the slopes anymore (see pics). Shredding, grinding, railing, jibbing and jumping, everything was possible!!!  Not forgetting the nightlife, which I also enjoyed ;)

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/01_Robin_Easter_Shred/Robin_Notz_Saas_Fee.jpg

Looking back at the overall season I am very happy with my performance. I have had to concentrate a bit more on my studies this year, so therefore I did not compete in as many contests as in the past. Nevertheless, the season was a success. I put more energy into training (indoor and outdoor), had a lot of fun moments and did not get injured.

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/08_April_2013/01_Robin_Easter_Shred/_DSC2510.JPG

Travelling around with my parents and having Dad as my own personal photographer helped a lot in supplying all the fotos. One of the most impressive moments I had this season was the invitation to a professionally coached Freeride weekend in Klosters. Deep powder and avalanche training, taught me a lot. The biggest highlight though, was meeting and shredding with Andy Finch (American Snowboard Pro) in Grindelwald in March, while he was on his tour of Europe.

So folks, this is all for the moment, let’s enjoy the last days of snow because soon, I will be changing my SC snowboard for my skateboard!!

Chris Roach at Tom Sims Retro Worlds 30th Anniversary

tl_files/BLOG 12-13/07_March_2013/03_Chris_Roach/facebook_-914619734.jpg

From March 23-24 I was invited to take part at Tom Sims Retro Worlds 30th anniversary competition, which was a great honor for me. GS was laid out the way Tom would have wanted it and the pipe had a fun backside hit. So cool to see some old Sims team mates like Delaney, Downey, Kidwell, Kimmel, Routh and all the Tahoe greats.

First time meeting Tom was at the Worlds in Breckenridge. I broke my Sims board in practice and Tom invited me up to his room to set a board up for the comp (Kidwell was as well chilling in the room - "no way that's Kidwell!"). Spoke with Tom aobut SC coming to me for a ride, he gave me his opinion on what he thought was best for me in 91/92. Thanks Tom for paving the way!

Wsup? Been so used to shredding the park due to lack of powder lately, I almost forgot how amazing it feels under you! YES, it snowed a nearly a foot up at China Peak recently. Took advantage and was able to do some ascent hiking  to the "stashes". Dropping in and making fresh tracks with friends is what it is all about!
